Globalization—notwithstanding Starbucks and The Gap and Abercrombie and Fitch—has a positive side. It has made travel simpler and much less intimidating. Find baggage claim at SUX and you can find it at LAX. Return a rental car at SeaTac and you can return one at Miami International. Learn to navigate your home airport and you can pretty much make it through any airport in the world.

The ties that bind: Locum doctor returns to Canyon de Chelly
Just a little story as I prepare for a three-week Indian Health Service locum tenens assignment in Tsaile, Arizona, near Canyon de Chelly: The first time I hiked in Canyon de Chelly, seven years ago, our group found a little border collie dog near death under a tractor down in the canyon.

I just completed a very positive locum tenens assignment with VISTA and—because it offers a bit of a twist on the standard—I wanted to share it.

It’s true, in the early days some people thought doctors who worked as locum tenens might be snake-oil salesmen. They questioned our ability to get and hold good jobs and refused to introduce us to their sisters. They said, “What? You’re Dr. Terry Cloth and you’re calling about local tennis?!”

TSA has instituted a new Secure Flight Program that affects all air travelers. When making reservations, the following information must be provided for each passenger:
- Full name as it appears on government-issued I. D. approved for traveling
- Full date of birth
- Gender
VISTA will be required to provide this information when arranging travel for you. In addition, if you use a redress number (to prevent misidentifications through the Department of Homeland Security Watch List) we can provide it to the airline for you when we make your reservations. Questions?Just ask a member of our Travel Team next time you book travel to a locum tenens, extended placement, or international locums assignment.

Senior surgeon, seasoned locum tenens, on the importance of role models
My essay,” On the importance of role models: The views of a senior surgeon,” appeared in the February 2010 edition of the Bulletin of the American College of Surgeons. Two stories inspired me to write it—one about an “eternal fellow” who found outstanding role models who helped him fulfill his dreams and become an excellent surgeon, and the other told by the daughter of a close friend and colleague who rejected the possibility of a surgical career on the first day of her first clinical rotation. In one day she concluded that surgeons were not the kind of people she wanted to work with every day.

In addition to his medical career and his accomplishments as a mountaineer, skier, scuba diver, windsurfer, sailor, rock climber, and world traveler, Bruce McDonald is a photographer. He sent VISTA these photos from a recent assignment in Shiprock, NM. This is definitely a situation in which pictures speak louder than words.

Locum tenens and the foodie physician: Installment 1
While working in Bermuda, my husband and I enjoyed seeing the local fishermen selling their catches on the side of the road. It happened to be a lobster season, and as you can see, they were quite large! You could either take them home, or they had a steaming pot going to cook them right on the spot. Our favorite dining spot was right on the deck of our apartment. The sunsets from the deck were the best we've seen.

One of the most memorable places I have stayed during a locum tenens radiology assignment was a converted carriage house behind the home of a radiologist I was helping out. It was restored with such attention to detail, charming, with a spiral wrought iron staircase. And it was within walking distance of the hospital.
