In addition to his medical career and his accomplishments as a mountaineer, skier, scuba diver, windsurfer, sailor, rock climber, and world traveler, Bruce McDonald is a photographer. He sent VISTA these photos from a recent assignment in Shiprock, NM. This is definitely a situation in which pictures speak louder than words.

Looking north from Shiprock, fields of wildflowers stretch to the San Juan Mountains.
White settlers named this formation Shiprock. However, the Navajo believe that their people were brought to the area from the north on the wings of a giant bird. Once its passengers were discharged, the bird folded its wings and became this rock, which they call Tse Bitai, The Rock with Wings.
