While many of those that work in the healthcare profession know that March 30th is National Doctors' Day, there still exists a lot of unknown information about the origins of Doctor's Day.
Doctor's Day dates back to the 1930s when a physician's wife in Georgia, Eudora Brown Almond, had a luncheon to celebrate the important role that physicians have always played in the local community.

In recent years, physician demand has increased. According to Becker’s Hospital Review, there are several reasons why demand is on the rise: patient volume is greater due to aging Baby Boomers, and there is an increase in insured patients due to the Affordable Care Act. There is also a steady rise of physician shortages, nationwide. To meet physician demand, locums are increasingly being relied upon to meet the staffing needs of hospitals and healthcare facilities—this has greatly increased the number of locum tenens jobs.

In a recent 2015 Medscape Physician Lifestyle Report, physicians reported experiencing more job-related burnout than other American workers—46% of physicians reported burnout. According to the prior 2013 Lifestyle Report, 39.8% of physicians reported job-related burnout. The number is rising and the effects—physical and emotional—are widely felt among providers. The highest reported rates were among physicians working in critical/emergency care, primary care, surgery, and internal medicine. With such large reported numbers of burnout, is there a solution? From humble roots, the entire locum tenens industry has successfully developed into a cottage industry that very few medical facilities in 2016 can do without.
Locum tenens doctors are an integral part of making healthcare work. Imagine how patients used to see their doctors before large hospitals and group practices existed. Back then, it was relatively common for doctors to make house calls for any patient too sick to come to the local office. Indeed, there were plenty of doctors back in the day who did not even maintain regular offices. Most of their work was done in the homes of their patients. Believe it or not, the house call model is making a comeback in America which has led us to wonder if there is any place for house calls in psychiatry.

It wasn't that long ago that locum tenens providers were not always looked upon favorably by our nation's hospitals. Fortunately, that has changed and the locum tenens industry is continuously growing. According to Becker's Hospital Review, 90% of America's hospitals and healthcare facilities used locum tenens to one degree or another in 2013. That was up from 73.6% the year before.

Demand for locums continues to be high throughout the medical community. Hospitals and medical clinics alike are coming to realize that locums provide valuable services for filling temporary staffing gaps, expanding services, and handling emergencies. In light of that, Beckers Hospital Review put out a 2014 list of locum specialties with the highest demand. Rankings were the result of data compiled from responses to staffing agencies provided by hospitals, medical groups, community health clinics, and government facilities.
The 2014 ranking showed the following five locum specialties in highest demand:
