The myths surrounding locum tenens work continue!
In a previous post, we addressed misconceptions around job factors such as money, stability, workload, and the ability to really get to know your patients as a locum tenens clinician. We’re continuing to tackle the many myths of locum tenens here. Have you heard any of these before?
Myth 1: Locum Tenens Clinicians Are Given the “Unwanted” Jobs
Locum tenens work is not “bottom of the barrel” work. It is just as critical and can be just as rewarding as permanent placements. There are opportunities for any clinical specialty in a variety of settings, with chances to save lives and take on exciting cases, help short-staffed facilities or fill a critical need in underserved regions.
Myth 2: Locum Tenens Means Traveling
The chance to travel is a definite benefit of locum tenens work, but not a requirement. Ultimately, it’s up to you how far you travel and how often. If you prefer to expand your career while staying close to home, you might discover there are plenty of locum tenens work opportunities close by. Make sure you let your recruiter know your requirements and preferences so that they can find you assignments that will be a good fit.
Myth 3: Locum Tenens Clinicians Are Seen as Incompetent
If you’ve ever considered locum tenens work and this myth stopped you, reconsider—because it’s simply not true! Most physicians and advanced practitioners are familiar with locum tenens as a practice alternative, and locum tenens clinicians are widely accepted by colleagues and patients.
