VISTA Staffing Solutions (VISTA), one of the nation’s largest physician staffing companies, today announced the formation of a new unit to offer temporary staffing in occupational medicine, neurology and physical medicine and rehabilitation.
VISTA is an employee-owned company headquartered in Salt Lake City. The company has offices in Atlanta, Georgia; Bristol, Connecticut; and Arroyo Grande, California. It was founded in 1990 and employs more than 100 people.
"We have seen a marked increase in demand for the neurology and physical medicine and rehabilitation specialties outside major urban areas," says Therus C. Kolff, MD, MPH, the founder of the temporary medical staffing industry and an executive member of VISTA’s Board of Directors. "The demand for occupational medicine continues to be high in urban areas, especially those in the Midwest," he observed.
According to Dr. Kolff, most physicians who choose to take temporary assignments do so to have greater flexibility and improved quality of life. Other factors contributing to the number of physicians choosing temporary assignments include skyrocketing malpractice premiums and increasing bureaucracy in health care.
In 1979, Dr. Kolff founded the locum tenens (Latin for "one holding a place") industry when he established the country’s first company to place physicians in temporary assignments. In 2003, at least 25,000 physicians took locum tenens assignments and the locum tenens staffing industry had an estimated $2 billion in revenues.
Typically, locum tenens employment is attractive to physicians just out of training, those wanting to make an informed transition from one job to another, and those seeking to practice less than full time while maintaining their clinical skills and credentials.
VISTA is the only locum tenens staffing company with a team fully dedicated to occupational medicine, neurology and physical medicine and rehabilitation. The team is headed by Gordon Stipanovich, a five-year veteran of the industry.
The company will exhibit at the American Academy of Neurology Annual Meeting, April 25-29 in San Francisco, Ca., and at the American Occupational Health Conference, April 30 - May 7, Kansas City, Mo.
