He sent VISTA these photos from a recent assignment in Shiprock, NM. This is definitely a situation in which pictures speak louder than words. The view from the top of Ten Mile Mesa, a popular hiking, biking, and sunset-watching spot for locum tenens physicians working in the area. The Shiprock can be seen in the distance near the horizon. Dusk settles on Ten Mile Mesa and Mesa Verde. Looking north from Shiprock, fields of wildflowers stretch to the San Juan Mountains. White settlers named this formation Shiprock. However, the Navajo believe that their people were brought to the area from the north on the wings of a giant bird. Once its passengers were discharged, the bird folded its wings and became this rock, which they call Tse Bitai, The Rock with Wings.
