Meeting characters in a land with character - my locum tenens assignment in New Mexico

As we were traveling to Taos for my locum tenens assignment, we were crossing a large area of plains on the way to Las Vegas, New Mexico. We ran across a man on a horse.

He looked like he was out of the 1800s. He had a long beard and an oil-skin coat; he rode on a paint pony and he was leading another pony. We stopped and talked with him and photographed him. His name is John Wayne Haynes. He was traveling on a long ride from Michigan to Santa Fe! It took him over six months to make his trip and he has been acclaimed by the Long Riders Guild, which chronicles such things. It turns out that he has become quite well known. We have since gotten to know him. My wife, Dee, has done two paintings of him that are on her website,www.deebearddean.com. They have aroused a lot of interest.
