It’s not uncommon to enjoy 60 or 70-degree winter days in North Carolina. All four seasons are comfortable, with milder summers than farther south. Home to both the Appalachian Trail and the sandy beaches of the Outer Banks, North Carolina has some of the most beautiful scenery on the east coast.
Lengths of beach mean endless ocean-bound activities—like surfing, boating and diving—while plenty of rivers make white water rafting a popular adventure for North Carolinians. All that water combines for great fishing. Coastal North Carolina is known for its marlin and holds numerous big game fishing tournaments each year. Charming lighthouses attract sightseers, and Crystal Coast is just one spot that draws shipwreck explorers to snorkel and dive.
Don’t let the “North” in North Carolina fool you. In addition to southern expressions, hospitality and manners, you can expect the best of southern food in NC. Barbecue is some of the most famous in the world, here. There are countless pitmasters serving up award-winning barbecue across the state, from hole-in-the-wall joints to big name chains.
First in Freedom and First in Flight, North Carolina contributed its fair share and then some to historic moments. The state was the first to declare independence from England and many Civil War landmarks can be found here. And of course there’s Kitty Hawk, where the Wright Brothers first took flight. Fast forward to today, and you’ll find three major universities right in the middle of North Carolina—plus the biggest rivalry in college basketball. Research Triangle Park is in this same area, one of the largest research and job hubs in the world.
Like to get out on the trails and enjoy the wilderness? North Carolina is home to the “Grand Canyon of the East,” Great Smoky National Park and plenty of state parks. Or if you’re more of a city dweller, Charlotte, Raleigh and other bigger cities offer impressive skylines and countless activities like pro sports teams, nightlife and dining.
